VQFC players celebrate Serphine Shila Juma's goal against Visiru Combined FC in a friendly match on 3rd May, 2024

Thursday, May 02, 2024 and Friday, May 03, 2024 were busy days for Vihiga Queens Football Club (VQFC) following a series of friendly matches that formed part of our ongoing training schedules in preparations for our remaining FKF-WPL fixtures for the four-time Kenya Women Premier League giants.

On Thursday, we played against Sevilla FC and lost 2 nil. In the second match of the day, we narrowly lost 1 nil to Gavalagi FC. All the two opposing teams are currently playing in the FKF VIHIGA COUNTY MEN LEAGUE.

On Friday, Queens fell to a 2-1 defeat against another FKF VIHIGA COUNTY MEN LEAGUE side Visiru Combined FC. The opponents scored all the two goals in the first half. Undeterred by the previous day’s setbacks, we rallied and came agonizingly close to levelling the score before halftime, with attackers Tumaini Waliaula and Emily Morang’a Moraa finding spaces but firing their effort just over the bar.

After the break, we intensified our efforts, pressing for an equalizer. Several goal scoring attempts presented from Tumaini’s powerful shot that was denied by the Visiru Combined keeper, with Morang’a and Martha shooting wide. In the 70th minute, Juma’s introduction replacing Providence Khasiala Mukalo, saw the opponents net in the dying minutes of second. Juma’s goal was from combination play involving attackers Tumaini Waliaula and Emily Morang’a, setting through midfielder Martha Amunyolette’s 30 yarder shot on goal. The shot skuttled the Visiru Combined keeper off the ball’s path resulting in a rebound straight to Juma who fired past the keeper in the back of the net.

While addressing players, Head Coach Boniface Nyamunyamu encouraged his charges, urging them to keep their heads high as they continue tightening every loose end.

“I am satisfied with your individual and collective performances from the 3 build-up friendlies. Quite well in, based on our expectations and the subsequent feedback from the outcomes. Yes we may have lost all the 3 friendly-matches, however as the Technical Bench, we are encouraged by your showcase, considering that we subjected you to medium-sized formidable men sides. The positive impact to the team is the combination of fitness versus tactical checks and performances respectively, which we seek to take advantage of. Nonetheless, we are not leaving anything to chance at the moment. Our sight is focused on what is ahead of us, which is winning them all,” Averred ‘Bonny’.

In her remarks, youngster Serphine Sheila Juma who scored the sole goal in the match against Visiru Combined FC expressed her confidence in the team, despite the overall results.
