Saturday, August 17, 2024, will forever be etched in the history of Vihiga Queens Football Club (VQFC). The occasion marked one of the club’s most significant milestones, celebrating a decade of excellence in women’s football.
Kidundu Grounds, the training home of VQFC, began filling with guests all gathered for the much-anticipated launch event from as early as 11 a.m. The atmosphere was electric, with a diverse playlist of music setting the perfect backdrop for this momentous day.
Local artists seized the opportunity to entertain the crowd with energetic performances, many improvising freestyles inspired by the event’s theme. Fans were also actively engaged, participating in trivia games that tested their knowledge of their beloved team with prizes handed out to the most dedicated supporters.
The event gradually moved into a more formal phase with speeches. Vihiga Queens’ CEO, Michael Senelwa, took the stage first, recounting the club’s illustrious journey over the past ten years.
“Our vision as a team remains strong. Since 2014, VQFC has transformed livelihoods for many young Women in Kenya and East African Region by tackling the Gender Mainstreaming issues through football sporting success. We’ve conquered Kenya, holding the highest number of titles SEVEN (7) in (10 YEARS) in Women’s Football,” Senelwa declared. “Our mission to conquer Africa is ongoing, we are proud to be the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA Region champions—a victory that allowed us to represent East Africa in the continental tournament in Egypt in 2021.”
Head Coach Boniface Nyamunyamu echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that preparations for the upcoming season are in full swing, with a focused effort on refining the team’s strategy and addressing last season’s challenges to achieve even greater success moving forward.
