Diana Cherono celebrates her goal against Zetech Sparks at Imani Complex Ruiru

It was a return to the scene for Vihiga Queens FC when Diana Cherono Sigei hit Zetech Sparks net in the 39th minute from Phelistus Kadari’s assist, the sole goal that set the sides apart.

Queens who took control over the first 45 minutes, could have been further ahead with more clinical finishing. Dominating the match with 56% possession, they missed a host of clear chances (3 in the first half and 3 in the second half) from a total of 17 shots.

The opponents had their fair share of events, with attacks, each on either half. However, the enforced camaraderie of the Queens on duty led by exemplary woman in between the sticks, shot stopper Sophy Akinyi assured the team’s maximum points, garnered from her clean sheet. The defense line was superb, with effective intersections from center halves Ruth Khasokha and Robai Kebedi blocking the opponent’s attacks. Meanwhile, the quadrant led by woman of the match Martha A Maureen Ater, Providence Khasiala, Martha Amonyolete and Tumaini Waliaula, and later enriched by substitutes Emily Morangá and Faith Marende, kept the opponents ever busy and tired at the heart of the field.

In the end, the win ensured Vihiga Queens avoid back-to-back defeats in the FKF Women’s Premier League following their 1-0 loss to Kenya Police Bullets FC in February, allowing them to keep in check with their competition rivals’ for title hopes. With leaders Kenya Police Bullets FC in pole position in the race for the crown on 40 points out of 16 matches with 3 matches left, the Queens sit second on the logs with 31 points out of 14 matches with 5 matches to go.

Head Coach Nyamunyamu is confident that the work put in while on fixtures break is now seen and will yield more fruits.

“3 points from an away match at this point in time is quite a positive build up to the title chase. What is needed is consistency in executing the remainder of the fixtures, a task that we are equal to as a team,” affirms Nyamunyamu.
