Vihiga Queens FC have made a false start at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League in Cairo, Egypt.

The CECAFA giants suffered a 1-0 defeat to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies this afternoon in a Group B match played at the Al Salaam Stadium.

Although Vihiga Queens showed good fighting spirit, a defensive lapse after only 3 minutes gave Melinda Kgadiete chance to score the lone goal.

The Queens fought back strongly and tried to find goals, but did not take their chances. Vihiga Queens goalkeeper Lilian Onyango Awuor put up a Woman of the match performance stopping several shots at goal.

Charles Okere, the Vihiga Queens coach said that although they lost the opening match, his team battled well especially in the second half.

“We shall now go back to the drawing board and plan for the second match against Asfar Club,” added Okere.

Later today Morocco’s Asfar will face Nigerian side Rivers Angels FC in the second Group B match.

The inaugural tournament kicked-off on Friday with Wadi Degla (Egypt) stopping AS Mande (Mali) 3-1, while Ghana’s Hasaacas Ladies FC also picked a 3-1 victory against Malabo Kings (Equatorial Guinea).
